Even though I have seen quite a few bands at teh Jazz festival today, I think I should give you all a non-concert photo, just so you don't get overwhelmed by all the concerts. So here is a photo from a photoshoot for a dance performance poster. This is one that was not chosen, but I like it... so, as it will not be turned into a poster, I better show it here :)

OK. I have to wonder sometimes. Today I have seen 6 bands... It is like I have been at a mini festival... It all started with 3 bands early in the morning and then in the evening I went to three jazz concerts. So how to choose the photograph of the day... impossible I tell you, impossible... Well no, obviously it is not impossible, because I chose one. I decided to show you one of Phil Minton which was the last concert of the night. Because I like it. I like the face.

Tonight it was time for a photo exhibition... As tomorrow is the start of the Ljubljana Jazz Festival, the photo exhibition depicts jazz musicians. Some of the photos were really good, others not so... well I guess somebody else might enjoy the other ones. Overall my favourite were the photos by Petra Cvelbar and Iztok Vidmar. It is strange because they are very much opposites... however, both manage to capture something I like... Petra gets an incredibly sharp and clear picture, while Iztok does much more dark photos with just small light patches... Petra's photos are so sharp you can see what is on the mind of the musician, while Iztok's are made with such a deep and intense feeling that you can actually experience what the musician is thinking. All in all, a nice evening...
But just to keep you on your toes, here is a photo that was not done by neither of them... (it is good though)

Sometimes you need to change your perspective, even if it is every so slightly. This time I dropped into a jumping fish position. Above the water, just that little bit so that my camera did not get wet (no, I do not have a plastic casing for it, but then again I also don't think I really need it). And I think it provides a nice change. You?

A night to gossip. Well, OK, maybe I am not the right person to gossip with. I am not up-to-date with the gossip. But last night I was. Up to date with Gossip. As I had such a busy week I did not even sort out a photo pass, but then Neli & Roman gave me a free ticket (thanx to you both). For a while I was thinking should I even take the camera with me as I do not have the photo pass. I thought that then the security on the door will ask what is in your bag and you know it will all get complicated... you know how it goes... But then I decided that if I do not take the camera with me, something will happen that I will really want to photograph and I will not be able to... and you know... drama... tragedy... disaster... the end of the world... and all that. So the camera went with me... and yes during the concert I did not have the best position, but hey, that's life... but then the singer went into the crowd (a brave thing when there is a couple thousand people who want to touch you) and I got some good crowd shots, which are different to the normal concert ones...

See? I told you I'll be back soon. But I really needed a few days off... But back to photographing anything I see again. This is from the New Young Pony Club concert from which I expected more (it wasn't bad, it was just OK), but that is how it is with expectations. You expect and then things just don't live up to your expectations. C'est la vie...

All good things come to an end (or so they say) and so did the nomad dance festival. I enjoyed myself, I guess the dancers did also, but I also guess we all found it hard and at times emotionally draining. I took loads of photos, some good (I hope) and plenty that not even I have seen yet.
I am too beat to write a lot but to all the nomads: enjoy and hope to see you soon, and for myself I hope that I will be invited to photograph some other festivals in the mean time.

According to the show it takes some therapy, some subconscious action, some strange sexual practices and the result is here... OK maybe this is not exactly what the performance is all about, but I thought it would make a good blog post...

As much as I love photographing dance performances I just had to also whizz to the concert of Disciplina Kitschme in between all this dance that I have been experiencing over the week. It is a band I listened to way back... in the olden days. Pure drum and bass, but live... Three people - one bass, one set of drums and three vocals (yes, I did see the drummer singing at some stage). Texts are very minimalistic, but the music is full even though it is played by two basically rhythm section instruments. Loved the concert, but unfortunately missed quite a bit of it as I was at two dance performances before the concert... but they were good, so I can’t complain...

my mind. Today I spent 13 hours photographing dance performances. The nomad dancers had a run through of all their performances (14) and of course there is no way I could walk out in the middle. What kind of person would I be if I photographed 8 performances and then say, sorry, your draw sucks... you didn't come in the first 8 and I can only photograph this much and then I need to go and drink beer with my friends... Yeah right... That's just not me... However, I did seem to lack a bit of energy after 11 hours and a half have past, so I might not have done justice to the last two performances. But that truly was beyond my control...

While I was photographing the rehearsal of the dance nomads, another dancer called me and said he needs a photo for a flyer or something for his show - and quess what... he needed it quickly. So after a cup of tea during which he explained very roughly what the show is about, we decided to play around and take a few photos... Here is one of the photos from the set...

about human stupidity. I will not go into explaining all of this to you, because I am sure you have already encountered it (human stupidity) at one stage or another and because I do not have enough blog space to do it… But here is a photo from the play…

My first one (that I photographed). Actually it all went by much faster than I expected... a quick walk, a slight stop and off they go... no real time to experiment and play around with the camera... So yeah, I got some you-know-these-are-the-clothes-photos (this is not one of them) but not any real this-is-me-playing-with-the-camera-and-lights-and-all-that... but now I know, so I will be prepared next time...

as a butterfly (albeit it is resting in this photo). As I spent the entire day at home working this was the only photo I took - while on my way to my lunch break (the only break of the day) - luckily I have my pocketcam with me on all occassions).
So, as soon as I grow wings I will fly off. Now I will sit still and concentrate on growing wings. Concentrate, concentrate... wings, wings,...

cool is this? Reading a poem from a seemingly endless scroll. Not that I understood any of this... well no, that’s a lie... There were some English words thrown in... I have no idea how that works in Japanese, but the main disappointment was that in the Slovene translation everything was in Slovene. Surely if the poet included English words in the Japanese original, the Slovene translation should also have these words in a different language... there must have been a reason behind the poet’s thinking (I guess). (But I better not get into a discussion on translations, because then it will feel like work, and that only reminds me of the immense pile of translations awaiting me on my desk...ooops, I better go...)

... for the season. Today the last event at the cancer clinic took place. No more until autumn. That seems a bit unfair to me… so everybody who is undergoing treatment during summer has got a double whammy (or even a triple… arrrghh I should stop thinking about all of these things). First they have cancer which sucks big time (this is really not up for discussion) then they are in hospital over summer (which also sucks) and thirdly they have no event to look forward to.
On the other hand I do understand the volunteers (who will still be there doing the harder things – albeit in smaller numbers). They also need a break from all this. You know holidays? Put their mind off everything. Well I guess if any of you out there have a performing talent (I didn’t see any of the Slovenia has talent shows – come to think of it I didn’t see any country’s talent shows – but as I understood there were a lot of applicants, so there must be some talent somewhere) and would come and perform for patients (keep this in mind!) I am sure something could be organised even over the summer.

There were a few performers before Sophie got hungry, most of which I have already heard(some not so long ago, and yet they had new material – go, Narat, go!). I think that Sophie is at her best when she gets all energetic and worked up. At the more calm songs (specially at the beginning) her voice seemed to wonder around in a slightly uncontrolled fashion, so I guess she can leave these ones to Frank Turner. But when she opens it all up... it is a whole different kettle of fish. (But I have to moan a bit over your photographing policy - so here it comes: Why? OK. From the 4th song onwards is fine (it was even obvious why once your concert started)... But from miles away? Why?)
